Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government, calling the alleged setting ablaze of a minor girl in Puri district a result of “systemic governance failure.”
Reacting to the incident in which a 16-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire in broad daylight under Balanga police station limits, Patnaik expressed deep anguish and questioned the safety of women under the current regime.
“Deeply anguished to know that a young girl was set on fire in Balanga area of Puri District… This is not an isolated act of violence. These incidents happening with shocking regularity point to a deep systemic failure of governance,” Patnaik wrote on social media platform X.
He further stated that the recurring nature of such brutal crimes reflects a breakdown in law and order and emboldenment of criminals under the BJP government, urging the administration to act swiftly and responsibly.
The incident comes just days after a separate case where a girl reportedly set herself on fire in protest over inaction following her complaint, and a month after another violent episode in Gopalpur.
Congress leader Srikant Jena also condemned the attack and accused the government of lacking sensitivity. “The government must bring in a law that instills fear in such criminal minds. These horrific cases are happening almost daily now,” Jena said.
According to officials, the minor victim was returning from tuition when a group of unidentified boys allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. She sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
Puri District Magistrate Chanchal Rana confirmed the incident and assured full medical and financial support from the administration. “Senior officials have been deployed, and the police are taking the case seriously. All required treatment and aid will be provided,” he stated.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida also expressed shock and promised that strict action would be taken against those responsible.
As outrage mounts across the state, Opposition parties are demanding concrete action and policy intervention to address the growing concern over women’s safety in Odisha.
